I have a couple of friends who are pregnant with their first baby and it’s amazing how much more I know now than I did a year ago when I was thinking about starting my own baby registry. The other day I talked a friend through starting her Amazon registry (SO convenient!) and then my other friend said, “Can you just send me her list so I can copy it as a starting point?”. That’s what we do, isn’t it? We talk to people we trust. We make decisions based on recommendations from people who we think have similar taste and interests as we do….
There is SO much out there and it’s totally overwhelming, so I thought that since I laid it all out for a couple of friends, I’d throw my massive list of recommendations on the blog as well. If you haven’t started your Amazon registry yet, start it before continuing so that you can add as you go…I’ll wait…
Here’s what this list doesn’t include: crib, dresser, glider, sheets and much of the room decor. That all feels too personal to make a solid recommendation, though if you’re curious, we got our crib and dresser (currently on sale!) at Restoration Hardware Baby (they have a save $100 on every $500 spent sale a couple of times a year – huge!!), our sheets at Land of Nod (except this amazing chamois one from PB Kids), a bookshelf, side table and this awesome X at Land of Nod (their furniture is currently on sale!) and our glider at West Elm. We’ve been happy with all of it.
In addition to the registry recommendations I am also doing THREE giveaways in this post – all for some much loved things on my registry list. You can join one or all of them, though you can only win one. None of these giveaways are sponsored, all are great (IMHO).
Giveaways will be open for 2 weeks until January 27. Winners must respond within 24 hours or a new winner will be chosen. US Residents only, please. Good luck!!
GIVEAWAY 1: I have a VERY gently used My Brest Friend breastfeeding pillow that I would like to give away. I have two of them because in my just had a baby craziness I thought I needed one upstairs and one downstairs. Turns out that after awhile I didn’t use either at all, but that wasn’t the fault of the pillow. Go figure. Anyway, I am giving away a used, but only very slightly (it’s CLEAN and probably used less than a dozen times) My Brest Friend nursing pillow in Green Rainforest pattern.
GIVEAWAY 2: These are a few of my or Simon’s favorite things albeit a little random. Boppy Lounger, Oxo Tot spoons, Baby Bjorn bib, Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes, Skip Hop Plate and Bowl a Rafflecopter giveaway
Now onto the registry list… we tried VERY hard not to overdo it with the baby supplies given that we’re living the condo / city life and I think we’ve done a good job. I can say with certainty that we have used every item on this list.
If you have feedback, suggestions, or questions I’d love to chat in the comments! Did I miss anything critical?
DIAPERING & BATH
Boppy Changing Pad Liners – Save yourself some laundry or worse, a changing pad. This is a worthwhile investment – buy 2 packs.
Changing Pad – There are cheaper options, but we really like this one and it fits our extra long changing table. Make sure you know what size you need because they’re apparently not standard (not that I had to return ours 2 times…slow learner).
Disposable Diaper bags – For the blow outs and stinky diapers away from home, these have been VERY handy.
Hooded Towels – We got some at Land of Nod, but this one is my favorite because it’s a little larger.
Rubber Ducky – I like this one because it’s also a temp guard – good for those initial baths when you have no idea what you’re doing.
Skip Hop Bath Spout Cover – Now that Simon is on the move, this spout cover has become a necessity.
Mustela Lotion – We really like this starter set.
Diaper Rash Cream – There are a few that we like; for the serious rash we like Dr. Smith’s, for everyday protection we like Grandma El’s. We actually use Grandma El’s on more than diaper rash, we use it on chapped cheeks and lips too – it’s all natural.
Diaper Caddy – I unnecessarily stressed about this for weeks because I couldn’t find anything that was attractive and would meet our needs. Honestly, I ended up with a plastic box that I picked up at Marshall’s (meant for the kitchen) and have been more than thrilled with it. Find one that meets your own personal requirements.
Diaper Bag – Loads of options, but I love my Kate Spade bag (similar).
Shampoo Cup – Something else would do, but we have one like this and really like it. I hear it’s also good for getting poop out of the tub. Eh hem.
HEALTH & SAFETY
Rectal Thermometer – We have this one and although I was scared to use it at first, it actually was painless – for both of us!
Vitamin D – The baby needs this supplement if you’re breastfeeding. There are a bunch, we’ve liked this one.
Babyganics Sunscreen – We used this when Simon was itty bitty and recently in Mexico and have only good things to say.
CAR SEAT, STROLLER & CARRIERS
Car Seat Mirror – I was against this at first and now I LOVE it. We like this one a lot.
White Noise Machine – Honestly, we use an iPod and portable speaker, but I have heard great things about this white noise machine if you want to go that route
Blankets – In addition to a stroller blanket from Land of Nod, our favorite blankets have been the Aden & Anais Muslin Swaddle Blankets – we use them all of the time to play on the floor or as light cover on a walk
Crib Mattress – We like this Colgate one because it has an infant side and a toddler side. So far so good.
Baby Monitor – I wanted a baby monitor that also had a camera so that I didn’t have to go into Simon’s room every time he cried, especially as he got older. As a first time mom, I needed the reassurance that a video monitor provides. We have loved this Motorola monitor.
NURSING & FEEDING
OXO Tot Spoons – I wish that I was kidding when I say that I now give these to everyone, but they are just that good. Get some.
Honest Organic Nipple Balm – I thought that this worked better than other balms that I tried. I didn’t have super horrible problems, but I had some issues and this was great.
Lansinoh Nursing Pads – Because leaking isn’t attractive.
Nursing Cover – I know that there are a ton of options, but I’ve had two and my Hooter Hider is my favorite. I love that it has pockets for pacis or a phone or whatever and, best of all, it hasn’t lost its shape at the neck, even with hundreds of uses. The cute patterns are fun too.
Milk Storage Bags – I like these and haven’t had any issues with leaking.
Plates and Bowls – We have a few sets of these Skip Hop Melamine plates and bowls and have been really happy with them.
OXO Tot bowls – These are great for storing solids or taking food out of the house – we use them daily.
My Brest Friend – I like this one because it was a bit bigger than others with space to lay the baby.
Dr. Brown’s Bottle Warmer – I talked about this warmer here – long story short, we are big fans. Not a necessity per se (J fought the counter space), but a very nice to have, especially if you’re doing bottles daily.
High Chair – We have both the Oxo Tot Sprout chair (in orange) and the Lobster (in red) and are huge fans of both for different reasons. The Oxo Tot Sprout chair is our daily use chair, the Lobster is great to travel with. If you need a second seat at someone else’s house, the Lobster is a great option.
Bibs – I like several different brands / kinds of bibs for different reasons. These were great when Simon was tiny and someone would give him a bottle. We use these Baby Bjorn bibs daily for solids – easy cleanup…there’s also this Oxo Tot bib that I like because it’s easy to take away from home. These Bumkins bibs too for the same reason.
Burp Cloths – You can get these or make these, but no matter what, have a lot of them. At least a dozen. You’ll have them everywhere. I like muslin ones and also used a lot of cloth diapers as burp cloths.
CLOTHING & APPAREL
White Onesies – I bought white onesies in every size for Simon and I’m so glad that I did. I love the Carter’s onesies for monthly pictures and under clothes when it’s cold. Simon also slept in the onesies when we first brought him home from the hospital.
Side Snap Shirts – Simon basically wore this and a swaddle for many days after the hospital.
Baby Hangers – We like the no slip grip on these plus they come in a few different colors.
Closet Organizer – These size tags are super helpful when you have a year’s worth of clothes to organize. It’s also helpful for your significant other to know what fits vs. what’s too big if you’re the one that does most of the dressing.
TOYS & READING
Happiest Baby on the Block – The 5 S’s for the win.
Lovie – I wanted to make sure that we chose a security blanket / lovie that is easily replaceable and also small, in the event that it becomes a favorite forever and ever. My niece swears by “Martha” her purple hippo, so I copied and got Simon a green frog, “Cleetus” (go with it). I LOVE these because they are soft and totally “lovable”.
Tummy Time Mirror – We received this one as a gift and Simon loved it. Still likes it a lot, actually.
Boppy Lounger – Perfect for carrying around the house when you need a safe place to set the baby.
Monthly Stickers – So many to choose from, but I love the Lucy Darling brand.
