Baby Registry Guide & Checklist + GIVEAWAY(s)!

I have a couple of friends who are pregnant with their first baby and it’s amazing how much more I know now than I did a year ago when I was thinking about starting my own baby registry. The other day I talked a friend through starting her Amazon registry (SO convenient!) and then my other friend said, “Can you just send me her list so I can copy it as a starting point?”. That’s what we do, isn’t it? We talk to people we trust. We make decisions based on recommendations from people who we think have similar taste and interests as we do….

There is SO much out there and it’s totally overwhelming, so I thought that since I laid it all out for a couple of friends, I’d throw my massive list of recommendations on the blog as well. If you haven’t started your Amazon registry yet, start it before continuing so that you can add as you go…I’ll wait…

Here’s what this list doesn’t include: crib, dresser, glider, sheets and much of the room decor. That all feels too personal to make a solid recommendation, though if you’re curious, we got our crib and dresser (currently on sale!) at Restoration Hardware Baby (they have a save $100 on every $500 spent sale a couple of times a year – huge!!), our sheets at Land of Nod (except this amazing chamois one from PB Kids), a bookshelf, side table and this awesome X at Land of Nod (their furniture is currently on sale!) and our glider at West Elm. We’ve been happy with all of it.

In addition to the registry recommendations I am also doing THREE giveaways in this post – all for some much loved things on my registry list. You can join one or all of them, though you can only win one. None of these giveaways are sponsored, all are great (IMHO).

GIVEAWAYS

Giveaways will be open for 2 weeks until January 27. Winners must respond within 24 hours or a new winner will be chosen. US Residents only, please. Good luck!!

GIVEAWAY 1: I have a VERY gently used My Brest Friend breastfeeding pillow that I would like to give away. I have  two of them because in my just had a baby craziness I thought I needed one upstairs and one downstairs. Turns out that after awhile I didn’t use either at all, but that wasn’t the fault of the pillow. Go figure. Anyway, I am giving away a used, but only very slightly (it’s CLEAN and probably used less than a dozen times) My Brest Friend nursing pillow in Green Rainforest pattern.

a Rafflecopter giveaway

GIVEAWAY 2: These are a few of my or Simon’s favorite things albeit a little random. Boppy Lounger, Oxo Tot spoons, Baby Bjorn bib, Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes, Skip Hop Plate and Bowl  a Rafflecopter giveaway

GIVEAWAY 3: Dr. Brown’s bottle warmer, glass bottles, and glass bottle sleeves a Rafflecopter giveaway

Now onto the registry list… we tried VERY hard not to overdo it with the baby supplies given that we’re living the condo / city life and I think we’ve done a good job. I can say with certainty that we have used every item on this list.

If you have feedback, suggestions, or questions I’d love to chat in the comments! Did I miss anything critical?

DIAPERING & BATH

Honest Company Diapers and Wipes – I have talked about these a lot, we’ve been very happy with them. Get your free trial.

Wipe Dispenser – We love the Oxo wipes dispenser. Our Honest wipes last a long time and I’ve never had them dry out in this wipes dispenser.

Boppy Changing Pad Liners – Save yourself some laundry or worse, a changing pad. This is a worthwhile investment – buy 2 packs.

Changing Pad – There are cheaper options, but we really like this one and it fits our extra long changing table. Make sure you know what size you need because they’re apparently not standard (not that I had to return ours 2 times…slow learner).

Arm & Hammer Nursery Fresheners – We put these inside the hamper and diaper pail – any place that may get a bit funky.

Disposable Diaper bags – For the blow outs and stinky diapers away from home, these have been VERY handy.

Diaper Dekor – There are a few diaper pail options, but we have liked this one – I also hear good things about Ubbi (and love the colors it comes in!). Don’t forget the refills.

Primo Eurobath – I wrote about this tub here – it’s fantastic.

Hooded Towels – We got some at Land of Nod, but this one is my favorite because it’s a little larger.

Washcloths

Rubber Ducky – I like this one because it’s also a temp guard – good for those initial baths when you have no idea what you’re doing.

Mustela Foam Shampoo – Smells sooooooo good – I wrote about my love of Mustela here.

Honest Body Wash

Skip Hop Bath Spout Cover – Now that Simon is on the move, this spout cover has become a necessity.

Aquaphor – Before we used any lotion, we used Aquaphor. We still use it almost nightly for dry skin.

Mustela Lotion – We really like this starter set.

Diaper Rash Cream – There are a few that we like; for the serious rash we like Dr. Smith’s, for everyday protection we like Grandma El’s. We actually use Grandma El’s on more than diaper rash, we use it on chapped cheeks and lips too – it’s all natural.

Diaper Caddy – I unnecessarily stressed about this for weeks because I couldn’t find anything that was attractive and would meet our needs. Honestly, I ended up with a plastic box that I picked up at Marshall’s (meant for the kitchen) and have been more than thrilled with it. Find one that meets your own personal requirements.

Diaper Bag – Loads of options, but I love my Kate Spade bag (similar).

Shampoo Cup – Something else would do, but we have one like this and really like it. I hear it’s also good for getting poop out of the tub. Eh hem.

HEALTH & SAFETY

Boogie Wipes – We love these – so much so that I am often stealing them to use for myself. Seriously.

Nose Frida – I didn’t want to love this, but I do. A LOT.

Rectal Thermometer – We have this one and although I was scared to use it at first, it actually was painless – for both of us!

Nail Clippers

Humidifier – We have liked this Crane humidifier a lot. I also recommend getting these ProTec cleaning cartridges to avoid the gnarly-ness from growing.

Hairbrush / Comb

Hydra Stick – Another Mustela favorite for the cold weather months.

Infant Tylenol and Infant Motrin – Our doctor recommended Tylenol first and then, once Simon was old enough, suggested switching to Motrin.

Vitamin D – The baby needs this supplement if you’re breastfeeding. There are a bunch, we’ve liked this one.

Babyganics Sunscreen – We used this when Simon was itty bitty and recently in Mexico and have only good things to say.

CAR SEAT, STROLLER & CARRIERS

Baby K’Tan Carrier – I talked about my love for this carrier here. I used it A LOT when Simon was itty bitty – I especially loved it for around the house.

Ergo 360 + Infant Insert – We have been really happy with this carrier and are still using it. Simon is about to be too heavy for a front carry, so we’ll be moving him to the back very soon.

Uppa Baby Mesa Car Seat + Shade

Uppa Baby Vista Stroller + Travel Bag + Footmuff

Toy Straps – I very quickly grew tired of picking toys up off the floor at restaurants and on walks – you will too. Speaking of, these are fabulous.

Car Seat Mirror – I was against this at first and now I LOVE it. We like this one a lot.

Stroller Hook – For your diaper bag and/or shopping bags. I like these and this.

SLEEPING

Mesh Crib Liners – I didn’t know that we needed these until Simon woke up in the middle of the night screaming because his arm was hanging outside of his crib. SO glad we got them.

White Noise Machine – Honestly, we use an iPod and portable speaker, but I have heard great things about this white noise machine if you want to go that route

Swaddles We liked the Summer Infant swaddles before Simon could wiggle out of them, then we preferred the Halo swaddles

Sleep Sacks – For when the baby isn’t being swaddled but still needs some warmth. We still use Halo Sleep Sacks nightly, but we’ve also liked the Summer Infant Sleep Sack

Blankets – In addition to a stroller blanket from Land of Nod, our favorite blankets have been the Aden & Anais Muslin Swaddle Blankets – we use them all of the time to play on the floor or as light cover on a walk

Pacifiers – There are SO many. We love MAM and my niece is in major love with Avent soothies.

Crib Mattress – We like this Colgate one because it has an infant side and a toddler side. So far so good.

Crib Mattress Pad

Travel Crib – There are tons of pack-n-play types to choose from, but we have loved our Baby Bjorn Travel Crib Light – we’ve traveled with it several times – light is key! Don’t forget a sheet!

Baby Monitor – I wanted a baby monitor that also had a camera so that I didn’t have to go into Simon’s room every time he cried, especially as he got older. As a first time mom, I needed the reassurance that a video monitor provides. We have loved this Motorola monitor.

NURSING & FEEDING

OXO Tot Spoons – I wish that I was kidding when I say that I now give these to everyone, but they are just that good. Get some.

Nursing Bras – I have tried a lot of them – I really like the Bravado Nursing Bra and Boob Design bras.

Honest Organic Nipple Balm – I thought that this worked better than other balms that I tried. I didn’t have super horrible problems, but I had some issues and this was great.

Lansinoh Nursing Pads – Because leaking isn’t attractive.

Nursing Cover – I know that there are a ton of options, but I’ve had two and my Hooter Hider is my favorite. I love that it has pockets for pacis or a phone or whatever and, best of all, it hasn’t lost its shape at the neck, even with hundreds of uses. The cute patterns are fun too.

Pumping Bra – I wrote about my love for the Simple Wishes Nursing & Pumping Bra in this post. Serious love.

Breast Pump – I have been really happy with the Medela Pump in Style. I also recommend having extra valves and membranes on hand in addition to extra bottles.

Milk Storage Bags – I like these and haven’t had any issues with leaking.

Dr. Brown’s Bottles – We love the glass bottles, both 4oz and 8oz. Don’t forget the sleeves!

Sippy Cups – These are the ones we love because they don’t leak. Dr. Brown’s and Thermos.

Plates and Bowls – We have a few sets of these Skip Hop Melamine plates and bowls and have been really happy with them.

Dishwasher Baskets – A large and small version.

Bottle Drying Rack

OXO Tot bowls – These are great for storing solids or taking food out of the house – we use them daily.

Bottle brushes – Another example of “there are so many”, but we like the Dr. Brown’s bottle brush and Oxo Tot sippy cup cleaning brushes.

My Brest Friend – I like this one because it was a bit bigger than others with space to lay the baby.

Dr. Brown’s Bottle Warmer – I talked about this warmer here – long story short, we are big fans. Not a necessity per se (J fought the counter space), but a very nice to have, especially if you’re doing bottles daily.

Munchkin Fresh Food Feeders – We use these for ice to help with teething, but I have friends who love them for solid foods too.

High Chair – We have both the Oxo Tot Sprout chair (in orange) and the Lobster (in red) and are huge fans of both for different reasons. The Oxo Tot Sprout chair is our daily use chair, the Lobster is great to travel with. If you need a second seat at someone else’s house, the Lobster is a great option.

Bibs – I like several different brands / kinds of bibs for different reasons. These were great when Simon was tiny and someone would give him a bottle. We use these Baby Bjorn bibs daily for solids – easy cleanup…there’s also this Oxo Tot bib that I like because it’s easy to take away from home. These Bumkins bibs too for the same reason.

Burp Cloths – You can get these or make these, but no matter what, have a lot of them. At least a dozen. You’ll have them everywhere. I like muslin ones and also used a lot of cloth diapers as burp cloths.

CLOTHING & APPAREL

Trumpette Socks – These are the only socks that stayed on little newborn feet. They come in some seriously cute designs.

White Onesies – I bought white onesies in every size for Simon and I’m so glad that I did. I love the Carter’s onesies for monthly pictures and under clothes when it’s cold. Simon also slept in the onesies when we first brought him home from the hospital.

Side Snap Shirts – Simon basically wore this and a swaddle for many days after the hospital.

Footed and Zipper Pajamas – No matter how coordinated you are, snaps are not fun at 2AM. Zippers are perfect. My favorite PJ’s are Carter’s (THE COZIEST!!) and Baby Gap.

Baby Hangers – We like the no slip grip on these plus they come in a few different colors.

Closet OrganizerThese size tags are super helpful when you have a year’s worth of clothes to organize. It’s also helpful for your significant other to know what fits vs. what’s too big if you’re the one that does most of the dressing.

Hamper – Ours is from Land of Nod, but I also love this one – super cute.

TOYS & READING

Expecting 411 + Baby 411 – My favorite pregnancy and baby books

Happiest Baby on the Block – The 5 S’s for the win.

Baby Signing

201 Organic Baby Purees

Alpha Block

10 Little Fingers & 10 Little Toes

Lamaze Robot and Stacking Rings

Sophie the Giraffe

Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes – This is Simon’s absolute favorite thing. I have no idea why, but it is.

Lovie – I wanted to make sure that we chose a security blanket / lovie that is easily replaceable and also small, in the event that it becomes a favorite forever and ever. My niece swears by “Martha” her purple hippo, so I copied and got Simon a green frog, “Cleetus” (go with it). I LOVE these because they are soft and totally “lovable”.

Tummy Time Mat or Play Gym – We had a Skip Hop play mat (similar) for tummy time and we borrowed this Plan Toys Play Gym from my niece (Simon LOVED it).

Tummy Time Mirror – We received this one as a gift and Simon loved it. Still likes it a lot, actually.

MISCELLANEOUS

Boppy Lounger – Perfect for carrying around the house when you need a safe place to set the baby.

Monthly Stickers – So many to choose from, but I love the Lucy Darling brand.

  1. Um, this list is amazing!!! This sounds silly, but I am obsessed with that temperature duck! How have I not heard about that before? And the spout cover – is Simon in the big bath now??

This registry guide will be so useful to so many people. Thanks for sharing!! Fingers crossed on the giveaways! xo

    • You’re the sweetest. Thanks Ailee. Simon isn’t always in the big bath, but sometimes I rinse him under the faucet, so the spout cover is a necessity. xx.

  2. Wahoo! Thanks for posting. I’ve cross referenced my Amazon registry and made some changes/additions based on this. Hope I win a prize too! 🙂

    • It’s wonderful! James and I have both been happy with it. The only thing that’s a little weird is the strap behind your neck (fastening it is cumbersome with baby), but otherwise we love it.

  3. I would love to win these for baby #2 being born in May! My baby must have from my 1st child was a good rocking chair – lots of hours spent soothing baby there 🙂

  7. I would like to win for my cousin, expecting her first baby at nearly 37 yrs of age. She is like a sister to me, always at my house more than her own growing up. With my kids, a bassinet was a must have.

  8. I would love to win any of these items for our first little one. We’re just starting to make our registry, so your list will be super helpful!

  9. Would love to win these for my little one due in May. There are so many “must-haves” but living in the city, I think the stroller and baby carrier are tops on the list. Thanks for the opportunity!

  10. Im hoping to win for me! My must have baby item (thus far- shes only 2 months) is our boba wrap – she lives in it and i am then handsfree!

  11. This is seriously the best darn baby list I have seen… love every single item! On of my must haves is a baby wrap/carrier! The K’atan look pretty amazing btw! With our little luv bug on the way & being a mommy to TWO little’s soon, having free hands will be a must. Thank you so much for this sweet chance, you are beyond wonderful! xx

  12. I love, love, love Dr. Browns bottles and my son is still using them and I have another one due this summer. I have never used the glass bottles and they are on my must try list. My must have item is a sound machine for baby’s room! Thank you!
