Preparing for Family Photos: What to Wear

Somehow I convinced J that we needed to get family photos taken this year. It was either my gentle charm that convinced him or the sweet smiles of a baby we all know and love… or my nagging…either way, we’re doing family photos this Saturday. I am both ecstatic and horrified.

For one thing, I still feel very lumpy (ahh, pregnancy) but also don’t want to be one of those moms that is never in any pictures because I don’t like the way I look right now. I want (very badly) to have beautiful family photos with Simon and J… I love my little family and I know that we’ll love looking back on the photos someday.

Simon has his first cold so he is a tad sniffly, which will hopefully go away by Saturday. I have a cold now too, which will hopefully go away by Saturday. Oh, and it’s supposed to be a high of 44 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday. Oof.

The stars might not be aligning the way I had hoped, but we are doing this!

We found someone who I think will be a great photographer, Beking Jossaint. Beking chose a perfect location for us – a little urban and a little natural. I love it. This is the first time that J, Simon, and I will have family photos since the ones we took at the hospital after Simon was born. SO grateful for this opportunity.

So, what the heck do we wear (of COURSE I think about this last minute, right?)… Luckily my friend Ailee recently posted a Family Photo 101 tutorial that I have read a couple of times. She is a wiz at putting these things together – I’ll be lucky if we make it out the door with pants on. Ha.

It’s going to be so cold that it may not matter what we’re wearing under our coats, but the one thing I am sure of is that we will all wear jeans. Here are a few looks that I’ve pulled together as inspiration. I am trying to use clothes already in our closets, so building on that…

Family Photo Inspiration

For Him: Joe’s Straight Leg Jeans | JCrew Lambswool Sweater | Cole Haan Saddle Shoe (similar) | Happy Socks

For Her: Paige Skinny Jeans | J Crew Silk Petal Sleeve Shirt | JCrew Schoolboy Blazer | Tory Burch Reva Flats

For the Little Guy: Oshkosh Jeans | Oshkosh Button Down | Old Navy Pullover Henley | Baby Gap Flannel Sneakers

I am a big fan of cohesive but not matchy matchy. What do you think? Do you have family photos taken? Any good inspiration to share? Any tips on covering up runny noses? 🙂

  1. Good reminder to us moms in stages where we don’t feel our cutest that we still need to be part of family photos. Kind of awkward when the kids grow up and wonder why mom wasn’t in any pictures. I will officially let my picture be taken at the next opportunity 🙂 the outfits are super cute and timeless (always good for a photo you want to hang and keep forever). I’m not a fan of the entire family matching either- it looks unnatural (unless of course your family wears identical outfits).

    • Unfortunately it canceled b/c of the SNOW. Yes, snow. But hopefully they’ll be on for this weekend because I cannot think about this anymore :). The outfits are the fun part!
