[Edited with additional ideas from my smart SIL]
Ok, it’s all baby all the time around here. Sorry about that. Something about not sleeping, lots of kicks and my ever expanding womb that make it hard to concentrate on much else these days…
I recently asked several of my friends what was in their hospital bag that I should consider as “must haves” and things that they wished they had brought with them…. here’s what I learned in no particular order… with some helpful (and maybe frightening??) commentary.
Robe (as you will want to walk around while in labor before the epi and you’ll have a bunch of wires hanging off of you)
My Brest Friend (or whatever breastfeeding pillow you want to buy)
iPhone and charger (to record breastfeeding side and duration)
- Relaxing music and headphones
Nursing bras / shirts
Comfy pillow (if you are particular about your pillows)
Drawstring pants (VERY comfy) for the recovery
A nice top (for you) and one nice baby outfit for the Baby Bella Pics (which you’ll tell yourself you won’t buy, and then you’ll end up buying the whole CD)
A cute baby blanket – also for the pics
Overnight/Extra Absorbent Panty Liners (you won’t love the mini diapers they give you)
3-5 pairs of underwear
A big shopping bag (like a reusable grocery bag) to collect all of the stuff that they give you for the baby. Diapers, wipes, pads, numbing spray etc.
Eye mask (as the room is pretty bright) if you hope to get any rest while you labor down
Hand cream/face moisturizer (as the room was VERY dry)
- Breast pump
Toothbrush and tooth paste
Shampoo / conditioner
Makeup (for pictures)
A couple of baby outfits (blowouts possible)
Granny panties. I mean full coverage. You are going to need some support with the enormous pad you are going to wear (NO REALLY, fullest coverage possible…and the always pads in the purple wrapper that look like newborn diapers)
- Hard candy for sucking during labor
- Shower shoes
- Tops that open in front
- Snacks for husband
Added by me because…
- Contact list (Mohel’s phone number!)
- Insurance card
- iPad / laptop
What’s missing from this list?
If you do a pinterest search on this topic you can find a lot of garbage and a lot of (maybe) helpful links, but I trust the people that I know best… so? Hit me…
Oh and also, keep growing baby – 9 more weeks please. Just because your Mom might be prepping doesn’t mean that I am ready. Or that you have a room yet. Details.
A funny aside…
J graciously painted every wall in our downstairs hallways this weekend. We noticed after the walls looked much better that it made the dirty and scratched white baseboards stand out even more. This is the conversation that ensued.
M: “Wow, the walls look awesome.”
J: “Ya, now I need to do the baseboards but that’s low priority at the moment.”
M: “It’s fine, we’ll just bring baby home from the hospital and he’ll call his friends and say “what does your house look like because mine kind of sucks… it has dirty baseboards!”.”
For some reason (I’ll call it sleep deprivation) this made us laugh hysterically and then I was told to leave because laughing wasn’t good for a steady painters hand.
I like to draw what the baby’s room will look like once we have furniture and pictures and stuff. It’s a new hobby of mine – obviously normal.
J said, “what are you thinking for the gallery wall above the dresser?”
M: “Don’t worry, I have it all drawn out. TO SCALE!” (feeling proud but laughing hysterically)
J: Looking at my “to scale” drawing… “umm, why is the 16″ mirror the same size as the 8×10 photos and the 4″ hooks? …You might consider cutting out shapes and arranging them on the wall before you rely too heavily on this to scale drawing you’ve done.”
It’s sweet that he thinks that I am doing the hanging, isn’t it? 🙂
